Intentional Motion

This project is a high-energy, stylized visualization of modern gym training, blending motion-tracked HUDs, infographic UI elements, and 3D visual feedback to enhance the way we observe and interpret fitness performance.

The Challenge Awaits

What if you had to design a sports brand from scratch, complete with a style guide and motion visualization video? Our task was to do just that, creating a sports brand concept, incorporating motion tracking, and bringing in HUDs to visualize key metrics.

The Conflict

Adapting to collaboration, overcoming technical hurdles.

For me, the biggest challenge was adapting to working in a group. I’m used to handling everything myself, so collaborating meant adjusting to different workflows and learning to share assets. Motion tracking presented its own set of difficulties due to the lighting challenges in our footage, and aligning with my teammates’ style guide rather than my own aesthetic made the project more complex.

Searching for the One

Aligning vision and skill to elevate the brand’s identity.

My team member had already developed a fitness brand, so we leveraged that foundation to establish a cohesive style. I took the opportunity to incorporate my 3D skills into our HUD designs, suggesting ways to enhance the overall visual appeal using motion and depth.

Bringing Ideas to Life

Transforming motion and data into impactful visuals

We divided the work into different scenes, each with its own HUDs, while I focused on the heart monitor, including a 3D heart animation and scientific-looking metrics like a VO2 monitor, BPM, and ECG chart. One particularly tricky scene was the jump-rope sequence. The camera’s pan and uncontrasted floor made motion tracking challenging, so I hand-drew the motion path and added a waveform to keep the visual smooth. I also built the jump counter, which turned out to be simpler than initially planned due to the rope being barely visible.

Testing the Magic

Refining every detail through feedback and teamwork.

I gathered feedback early, showing my render of the heart monitor to my teammates for confirmation on the style, since the style guide was still in development. Once approved, I continued building out the rest of the HUDs and received further input on refining the VO2 and BPM meters. After finalizing the jump-rope sequence, my team gave the green light, feeling that no further changes were necessary.

The Destination

A seamless blend of collaboration, creativity, and design.

In the end, the video turned out fantastic. I was particularly proud of how well we collaborated across scenes to create a unified, polished product. It was an effort that showcased not only our individual skills but also our ability to work together seamlessly.

Reflection on Journey

This project was a valuable experience in learning how to collaborate on video assets and compositions. If I could do it again, I’d ensure clearer communication about who is handling which tasks to avoid overlap and make sure deliverables are aligned. Despite these challenges, I think our team did a great job, and it’s given me the confidence to tackle future collaborative projects with even more preparation.
